My Love

  • Once upon a time
Searching for love where it could never be found
I put my rose-coloured glasses on
and wrote you a love song.

    I clung to the dream
Even as I watched the story fade
I cried myself to sleep each night
Longing to hear words you’d never say.

    I was so scared
That if I left you wouldn’t follow
Deep down I knew the truth
    Indeed, your heart was hollow.

    Chorus:

Would this be our love story?
    Time would tell, I believed.
Could this really be a love story?
My heart whispered yes…if you leave.

The choice, you made it easy
I walked away weak and ashamed
    Pieces of me shattered,
    Will never be the same.

I have put my glasses down
And now I stand here tall,
    I’ve breathed my soul together
And am grateful for it all.

    Chorus:

    This wasn’t our love story,
The way I thought it would be
I shake my head in wonder
My love, it turns out, was for me.

  • The year was 1994.

We were high school sweethearts who found their way back to each other. I believed so deep in my heart that it was meant to be.

I’d enjoyed writing poetry when I was younger, and was now inspired to write a love song. These lyrics truly reflect the adoration and admiration I felt at the time.

It’s been a beautiful thing reworking this song, looking back with a sweet nostalgia that up until recently was hidden under the layers of how the love story ended.
